What is CoolSculpting
At Parkway Plastic Surgery, we provide a fat-freezing procedure called CoolSculpting. CoolSculpting is the brand name for a non-invasive fat cell removing method called cryolipolysis that gets rid of stubborn fat safely and effectively. This method is also the only non-surgical, non-invasive, FDA-cleared procedure to use controlled cooling to safely target and eliminate diet and exercise-resistant fat. CoolSculpting is usually effective with just one treatment, however, for some patients, two treatments may be necessary.
The first step in the process is identifying the needed treatment areas and placing a clear gel pad to create a barrier between the cooling panels and your skin. During the procedure, you will feel a slight tugging feeling where the applicator adheres to your body. You will experience intense cold and punching, these sensations will subside as the area becomes numb. This takes around 30-45 minutes, and after the applicator is detached, your provider will do a brief massage to break up treated fat cells and then you are good to go! Most patients will need little to no downtime after treatment and this process typically eliminates 20-25% of fat cells in the treated areas.
Scientists came up with this idea when they studied what happens to fat during frostbite. They learned that fat freezes at a higher temperature than skin and that this cryolipolysis can cool your fat to a temperature that destroys it while leaving your skin and other tissues unharmed. Though you may not see results for a few months as the crystallized fat cells leave the body. This method works best for those with loose skin, poor skin tone, and other related skin conditions. CoolSculpting can be used in many areas of your body, such as under the chin and jawline, stomach, thighs, back and sides, under the butt, along the bra line, and upper arms.
CoolSculpting has a high success rate and fewer side effects than other procedures. Some of these side effects include swelling, bruising, sensitivity, skin redness, and localized pain. This method is a cosmetic one, so it will not address underlying causes of fat, but through proper diet and exercise, it is maintainable. Coolsculpting is not considered a treatment for obesity either, it is a technique that will help remove small amounts of extra fat resistant to weight loss. Once fat cells have been killed off through this method, they will not return, through if you gain weight, may gain fat back. After the procedure, it is even possible to drive yourself home.
