An Overview of Otoplasty (Ear Tuck) Surgery from Parkway Plastic Surgery in Kalamazoo
In general, otoplasty, or ear tuck surgery, is an outpatient surgical procedure that is done in order to reduce the size of disproportionately large ears, reshape ears so that they’re less prominent, change the position of the ears, or to correct a previous surgery if the results could be improved. Performed often on children, ear tuck surgery is best done on children whose ears are have reached their full size – usually age five – however it can be done on children who are younger is some circumstances.
If ear tuck surgery is something you’re considering for yourself or you child, you will need to have a consultation where we will do a number of things, including reviewing your medical history, performing a physical, and discussing the expectations you have for the results of the surgery. It’s important to not that, even if only one of the ears protrudes, or is too large, surgery will likely be performed on both ears in order to achieve the most balance and symmetry. If you or your child is determined to be a good candidate for the surgery, we will schedule your next appointment.
Typically, the procedure will take a couple of hours, however, the length of the procedure is dependent on the techniques used and the needs of each individual patient. During the procedure, your doctor will make incisions on the back of your ears and/or within the inner creases of your ears in order to remove unwanted cartilage and skin followed by adjusting the remaining cartilage and securing it with internal stitches.
After your surgery, you will be bandaged, prescribed medication, and be given instructions on how to make your recovery as smooth as possible. After a few days you will have your bandages removed. At this point, the ears will likely still be swollen and red, however, you will be able to see an immediate change in the look and shape of the ears. You will need to wear a headband or other support for your ears at night for a number of weeks as determined by your doctor.
